What Is Iyengar Yoga

14th December 1918 – 20th August 2014

Iyengar yoga is a form of Hatha yoga created and developed by BKS Iyengar who had  lived and taught in the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute, Pune, India until he sadly passed away in 2014.
BKS Iyengar dedicated his life to the study and practice of yoga and shared his vast knowledge with many dedicated students throughout the world.  His family and close disciples continue to teach at the Institute.

Iyengar yoga is an accessible tool for all who wish to deepen their self knowledge and understanding.  Through guidance and correct practice of the physical asana’s (postures) students can become more aware and aligned physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.  With it’s strong emphasis on precision and alignment, equipment such as belts, bricks, bolsters, chairs etc are used to further enhance asana’s and enable students to learn and practice in a safe and supported environment.

Classes differ from week to week and are carefully prepared with a particular outcome in mind.   Sequences taught work towards the development of strength, stamina, flexibility and balance, as well as aiding concentration, meditation and give a general sense of well being.
